Fern Tree, Mount Wellington

This has to be one of the easiest and best mountain bike trails near Hobart for those just wanting to go for a social cruise or family ride.

It follows the water pipe from Fern Tree out to near its start at the Wellington Fall weir 12kms away. The ride itself is very scenic including some lovely bush sections and ending with increasingly great views out to Cathedral Rock on your left.  It also has plenty of places to explore along the way including silver and Wellington falls.

The route imperceptibly gains about 200 metres in height on its way out towards the weir, making the return ride particularly pleasurable and easy.

The Queenstown Mt Owen Trail Network is designed to be shuttled, and while you can can play around in the foothills without doing so, you can't really enjoy (or even get onto) the real trails in this area without makng use of the shuttle - and it is worth it.  Just the view along on a clear day across to Mt Owen from the shuttle point is enough to bring a smile to your face, but commit to a couple of down hill runs and you will have an awesome day.  Does require a decent bike and skills to match to really appreciate these trails.

This short ride follows a section of the Tasmanian Trail from Railton to Sheffield and is on an old railway line for most of the way.  As such the trail makes for fairly easy riding as it passes through surprisingly pleasant bushland, plantations and farmland.
Railton and Sheffield make great places to explore, as do Sykes Sanctuary and Stoodley Plantation along the way.

This route heads out from Derby to the top of Rattler Hill, before heading back down again on some crazy steep descents, flowing trails and challenging single track.  The best time to ride this route is as part of the Blue Dragon Race when the trails are well marked and cleared, but for those who want to take it at a more leisurely pace, anytime of year is good to ride this trail.  This ride is challenging and you'll climb a total of 1,600 metres (broken up in many stages) over its 53kms, but it is worth it, with great riding, lovely forest and river sections, a possible detour out to Mount Paris Dam and great views from the top of Rattlers Hill as its reward.

Also called the OC track in some guides, this is one of the 'old school' trails in the Blue Tier area.  The actual track is 7kms of beautiful, but sometimes rough and rutted, trail dropping 450 metres from Jubilee Hill down to the bottom of the Weldborough Pass near Moorina.  It passes through beautiful forest, but you might not notice that so much as you enjoy the sweeping, sometimes plunging, descents as you navigate your way over the many little obstacles on the way.  Even me, who doesn’t like doing the same trail twice in the same year, would be happy for someone to give me a lift back up to the top for a second go at this one.

Location

This route is mainly on gravel roads, but don't let that put you off as there's some great highlights along the way including a beautiful section of old trail running up along the Huon River which will have those who don't mind getting wet and muddy grinning from ear to ear.  Add to this a trip past the once controversial Southwood site, a visit to Glovers Bluff, a walk out to Reuben Falls and of course starting and finishing at the Tahune Airwalk ... This is a good day out.

The Risdon Vale Trail is a short 2km XC loop built as part of a local initiative by the Risdon Vale Bike Collective and Blue Hill Trails. As it was built by young locals (under the guidance of a professional trail builder) it is a pretty solid achievement.  Time has taken it's toll however, and this is probably more a trail for local riders looking for some new trails or, rather than interstate or visiting riders. The Bike Park is pretty impressive and incorporates dirt jumps and a pump track

Pelverata Falls

Key Statistics

Distance
25kms
Duration

Time (hrs)
2-4 hours

Location

This ride ties together a couple of out and back rides to Grey Mountain and Pelverata Falls into a loop of sorts.   It will onlyappeal to more adventurous local riders who don't mind some really rough tracks and who are looking for a short bit of technical riding with some nice views at the end.

However it can also make a great day out for less experienced riders just so long as you are willing to walk your bike a bit.  There are plenty of options to extend or shorten this ride for those looking for more or less hours in the saddle.
