Sterling Valley Track

Key Statistics

Distance
21km (long loop) - 9km (short loop)
Duration
Single Day
Time (hrs)
1-4 Hours

Location

The heart of the Sterling Valley Track is a short, hard to find section of technical single trail which descends from the flanks of Mt Murchison down into Rosebery, however if you start back near Tullah and tackle the climb up as well, then you'll be treated to a lovely one way ride.  The route comes alive once every two years when the Wildside event is run, but otherwise it's sitting there waiting for those brave enough to try it.  It's a track best enjoyed during the later summer months when it may have dried out a bit.

Location

This route ties together some very easy cycling along the Ulverstone to Turners Beach cycleway and nearby backroads with the chance to go play on some pretty darn good singletrack in a mountain bike park on private land off Stubbs Road.  Some may wish to just do one or the other, but combined they make an enjoyable ride … Allowing you to stretch both your legs and your skills.

Tangara Trail

Key Statistics

Distance
47km: 35km (Southern Loop) + 17km (Northern Loop)
Duration
Single Day
Time (hrs)
3-5 hours

Location

The Tangara Trail is an almost invisible web of interconnecting trails between Seven Mile Beach and South Arm.  It often weaves between property boundaries and heads along quiet roads, beaches and bush trails.  There is good tangara trail signage all over the area, so with a bit of help from the website and a sense of adventure you really could just go trail chasing.

The route described here knits together some of the best sections of the trail, but throws in a few extra bits as well to make a nice figure of eight ride that will give even the most experienced cyclist a good day out.

The Domain, Hobart

The Domain XC track is a pleasant little 2.5km shared used trail, constructed by Dirt Art in 2016 with mountain bikers in mind.  It provides a great reason to head up to the Queens Domain for a quick burst with your friends when the trails call and the Meehan or Mt Wellington is too far away.  While all levels of riders will enjoy this trail, it makes for a great introductory ride with friends and family who are new to mountain biking.  You can just drive up and enjoy this short trail or you can combine it with Soldiers Walk and many other trails around the Domain for an hour or more of exploration.

Tooms Lake Circuit

Key Statistics

Distance
20kms
Duration
Single Day
Time (hrs)
2-4 hours

Location

This 20km circuit will interest both those who like to leisurely explore new areas on their bike as well as those who like a bit of adventure and challenge.  The circuit follows old 4wd tracks and is pretty flat the whole way around.  Any reasonably fit cyclist could tackle the ride, but there's a few tricky sections (and lots of mud) so be careful on this one.  A great ride for late summer when things have dried out a bit.

Trevallyn Nature Recreation Area

Key Statistics

Distance
16km (out and back)
Duration
Single Day
Time (hrs)
1-2 hours

Hidden away in the hills above Launceston, The Trevallyn Nature Recreation Area now has one of the newest and nicest sections of purpose built single track in Tasmania.   With 8kms of dedicated single track stretching from the Gorge Road to the Hoo Hoo hut, this is where you're inevitably going to start any play in the park, however if you're a little more adventurous and have a little more time, then don't overlook the other multiple use trails in the reserve.  There's kilometres of trails out there for those looking for a more old school Tasmanian experience.

Trip Hill is not a ride for everyone, in fact I think it would best be described as a ride for the crazy ones.  For a start it’s a ride up a hill from which you get no view, several of the best sections are currently so overgrown (April 2014) that I found myself pushing my bike downhill, a lot of the riding is through recently harvested forests and yet … if you’re in the area, you've ridden all the other rides and you’re looking for some good old fashioned bush tracks that and don’t mind the odd hike-a-bike … well you could just enjoy this little ride.

The Youngtown Regional Park is a pleasant little park on the outskirts of Launceston.  Although the ride is only a short 2.6km loop, the track has a good surface and makes for a nice ride if you're in the area.  It is mainly easy riding with a spot or two that will challenge beginner riders, but nothing technical.  The circuit would also make for a pleasant hour or so with young kids able to ride the distance.
